Bus stop map using OSM, Chelmsford.

No this ain't the Netherlands, this is Chelmsford! Rail hubs, combined with car parking charges, a real fillip to bicycle use

Oh look, new signs from @ChelmsCouncil to show how unwelcoming they are if you cycle to the city centre. One to add to my new blog.

Well I see there's been no improvement at Chelmsford @bandq. In fact its now worse! They hate cyclists! @bandq_help

Newly installed cycle racks outside the top end of High Chelmer Shopping Centre. Plenty of them in this location & nicely spaced apart.

Bike stands at Chelmer Valley park n ride. Bit on the small side. No CCTV in evidence

rather dirty route signs, (again university / the avenues seems to point the wrong way.)

Unclear which way to University... (it's opposite way to sign is pointing)

Rather subtle route and distance markers, too small to read whilst moving.

Look south along Chelmer Valley. Segregated path

cyclists should cross bridge and turn left to town centre past riverside ice and leisure.

Somewhat neglected sign, no cycling ahead

Chelmer Valley, Bunny walk, segregated path

segregated pavement through Anglia Ruskin campus, cycling side uneven due to roadworks and poor paving

Anglia Ruskin Campus, rather uneven patchy surface on cycling section of shared pavement

Alleyways, share use path, kerb between pedestrains and cyclists

Alleyways along the bottom of the Avenues

Looking East along Mill lane

Gates and bridge across River Chelmer

View North along Little Waltham road

View West to Mill lane, series of gates and bridge across River Chelmer

Closed off end of Little Waltham road, now bridleway, series of chicanes and one gate to go through

View across Essex Regiment way from Bridleway 39. Caution when crossing as fast traffic, no central island and limited visibility in either direction.

Where Bridleway meets Essex Regiment Way, Bridleway sign currently broken,

Loose gravel and tarmac on white road / bridleway

Bridleway is to the left of red & white barriers. Currently to narrow for cyclists

350 houses being built, with no apparent provision for cyclists.

No right turn allowed according to signage and central barrier, no allowance for cyclists

Pointless piece of "Bridleway" for 100 yards, just stick to the road.

New CyclePoint parking and shop near Chelmsford station

Recently widened and straightened shared path along the river Can near Chelmsford City Centre

Barriers removed along cycle route from Springfield Green to Chelmsford city centre. Now two simple bollards mark the point. Other barriers along the route have also been removed as have barriers on other routes, thanks to a concerted effor ... [more]

Paulk Hall Lane Ford

Dumney Lane, Byway open to all traffic, in good condition.

Where will the ncn1 take you?

Abell Way, where the Authorities allow the residents to park across the cycle path than have to put their cars in own drive/garage or even park on the road. Cycle network completely useless on this & adjoining roads due to this behaviour.

Going down Lonebarn Link into Abell Way, the authorities have put these filled sewer pipes in to stop road being used as a through road & a rat run for HGVs. Problem is they have completely blocked cycle path & partially blocked pedestrian ... [more]

There's quite an impressive shared-use track on either side of Howe Green, but it's not at all clear that there's a dropped kerb around the corner at this fairly unimpressive crossing.

Shared cycle, horse and pedestrian route east of Chelmsford

Covered cycle parking at the new Chelmsford magistrates' courts

Rising bollards, no cycling on the pedestrianised main shopping street of Chelmsford (cycle parking just to the right)

Route for cycles on the north side of Chelmsford cathedral

Nicely segregated bridleway alongside Main Road, close to the old Wheatsheaf.

Main Road has a segregated bridleway and footpath alongside it. The footpath has clearly been neglected for some time.

Route sign for Town Centre and shared pathway on Albert Road.

Route sign for South Woodham Ferrers (NW) on the corner of Albert Road.

Commemorative NCN Route 1 sign near The Meadows.
